CII: Second Son

by 17 Pygmies

/
  • Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

CII: Second Son is part two in a three part series based on the original short story “Celestina” (You might have noticed CII, like its predecessor, is sequentially numbered. Big hit y’all.) The story picks up with our hero, Captain Mora and fellow astronaut and sceientist/love interest, Isabel, waking up after traveling through a black hole, only to discover a colony of robots who have changed their chemical ‘mix’ to cope with a beautiful but mysterious world in which nothing ever changes. While adapting to their new surroundings, they learn some astonishing news from Herod, leader of the robots, and know they have no choice but to find a way to return home.
Musically, CII: Second Son is a tribute to all of the unique 1950-60’s era science fiction motion pictures (think The Day The Earth Stood Still), but this time the music is a bit darker, perhaps reminiscent of early Tangerine Dream, with the Pygs using more experimental sounds (that’s what happens when you buy a new M-Box) to reflect the more somber, stark moodiness of the storyline. It would not be out of the question for fans to compare CII Second Son as a continuation of the 17 Pygmies signature sound that was first explored and presented on their
classic 1984 release Jedda by the Sea. However, at this point (the bands 30th anniversary is in 2012) I would question the utility of having that count for much. But hey, this is a world where Lindsay Lohan still makes the news so…Having re-asserted themselves as one of the leading ‘art-rock’ bands (if there is still such a thing) on the cutting edge of pop musical exploration (again, if there is such a thing), CII: Second Son should have no problem appealing to the Godspeed You! Black Emperor audience, people who work at NASA, and is a natural with college audiences and the iPod generation alike. The limited edition, signed CD package, as with all Trakwerx releases, is elegantly packaged in a foil-pressed sleeve, including Part Two of the short story.

about

17 Pygmies La Quinta, California

Keeping in mind that we are talking about a band with a 39+ year history, 17 Pygmies are a band that has admittedly undertaken many personnel changes (the only original member is Jackson Del Rey) and diverged in any number of musical directions. The band now has a lineup that includes Jackson Del Rey (aka Philip Drucker), Jeff Brenneman, Dirk Doucette, Meg Maryatt and Greg Grunke. ... more
