Last Train

    COLLECTOR'S ITEM!
On the heels of the release of the 13 Blackbirds/13 Lotus 2 CD set, came the 7” vinyl 45 single Last Train b/w (when was the last time you saw “b/w”…eh?) Mocha Polka.
Originally written in 1989 as a “last ditch” effort to write a hit single and stay on Island Records, “Last Train” follows in the musical vein of the only 17 Pygmies song to ever garnerany actual commercial attention, From Theo, a track that appeared on the flipside (and when was the last time you heard “flipside”) of the Welcome LP. Last Train is therefore representative of the somewhat folk-a-delic, somewhat traditional songwriting side of the 17 Pygmies.
Based on a lilting melody reminiscent of Scottish/Irish jigs and reels, Last Train uses guitars, violins, accordions and a plaintive female vocal to relate the sad story of an unidentified band member about to board the last train to who knows where, but wherever that is, it’s far, far away. Because of its lineage, the song did not fit in well with the musical direction 17 Pygmies chose some 17 years later, but as an example of what the band was, and what they were
capable of, Last Train is a fitting farewell to an earlier chapter of a band and an era that has indeed become so far, so far away. Last Train is a must have for collectors and a good vehicle of new fans to discover 17 Pygmies.

about

17 Pygmies La Quinta, California

Keeping in mind that we are talking about a band with a 39+ year history, 17 Pygmies are a band that has admittedly undertaken many personnel changes (the only original member is Jackson Del Rey) and diverged in any number of musical directions. The band now has a lineup that includes Jackson Del Rey (aka Philip Drucker), Jeff Brenneman, Dirk Doucette, Meg Maryatt and Greg Grunke. ... more
